I saw the whales! - Ho visto le balene!

I saw the whales!! I saw the whales and I'm over excited about it even though all I've actually seen was the spout of water and from quite a considerably distance too. But since they were totally out of season here at Réunion – whale season goes from July to November –, well, I have all the rights to be excited! I saw them near the coast in Saint Denis, because, yeah, I've been to St-Denis this week. Saint Denis is the capital of Réunion. It's in the north and it's quite a big city for such a small island. I couldn't visit everything, naturally, but I saw some lovely bits of the city. First of all, the Jardin de l'État with its Museum of Natural History – the oldest museum in Réunion. The garden is beautiful, with many exotic trees that are endemic of Réunion and fountains and benches. The museum... well, I can't say that it was expensive because I paid 2€ to get in, but it was certainly not big. More precisely, there were four rooms and they were filled with animals from all the Indian Ocean but Réunion. BUT there was the dodo and I was happy! Once we finished with the Museum (ten minutes after we started), we walked for a while in Rue de Paris, a street famous for the wonderful maisons créoles. I absolutely love their architecture, it has that charm that lacks completely in the contemporary buildings. Many of them have been restored and bought by the state, but some others are in desperate need of restoration. Some others have been voluntary burned down by the owners to pocket the insurance money, or to make room to build a new house that has very little to do with the original one. The afternoon Edith (Guillaume's mother) and I had booked a visit to the Brewery of Bourbon, the Réunionese beer, because I was looking for the beer glass for my father. Well, the glasses were sold out, but we were trapped in a tour of the brasserie for nearly two hours, with a guide that did not know much and was not exactly nice either, in a hot and noisy factory where we went for the beer and saw mostly the bottling of Coca Cola, which in Réunion is sweeter than in any other country in the world. Why? Because in Réunion every drink is sweeter than in the rest of the world, and that is due to the fact that in the past the Réunioneses eat very poorly and to compensate they sugared their drinks. But right now the cuisine is balanced and the drinks are still sweet. After the brewery, we went to the promenade near the sea, where the ocean hits the city with all its forces, and where there are a lot of sharks (and whales!!), but no beaches. Then Edith drove me through the university campus and I have to say that I almost wanted to go to university again... almost. Finally, our last stop, the Vierge Noire: a statue of the Virgin Mary made of black stone. The legend says that a slave named Mario found refuge in a cave and prayed to a little, ebony statue of the Virgin Mary that he had with him to be able to elude his owner who was looking for him. As he prayed a Bougainvillea grew quickly around him, hiding him from his owner. The statue is in the very same cave. Another particular thing is that the statue doesn't retain any colour they tried to paint it with. It goes always back to black.

Ritorna sempre nera.
